Every day, thousands of people drive Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Tucson without realizing they're passing one of the most meaningful coffee shops in America.
I know because I was one of them.
For months, I drove Interstate 10 and made the same coffee stop so many of us do. I never knew that just five minutes farther down the road was a small, locally owned coffee shop with a mission unlike anything I'd ever experienced. And honestly... the coffee is better, too.
I found Heroes of Freedom Coffee on the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend. Looking back, I don't believe that was an accident.
I sat down with Hope Harrison expecting to hear the story behind a local business. Instead, I found myself wiping away tears. As Hope shared why she opened Heroes of Freedom Coffee, I wasn't just listening to her story—I was feeling it. My heart broke for Hope, for her daughter Heaven, and for every Gold Star family carrying a burden that most Americans will thankfully never have to bear.
Just a few days later, millions of Americans would spend Memorial Day gathered around grills, relaxing at the lake, or enjoying a long weekend with family. There's nothing wrong with celebrating the freedoms we've been given. But for thousands of families, Memorial Day isn't just another holiday. It's an empty chair at the table, a folded flag, a birthday celebrated without a father, a husband, a wife, a son, or a daughter. It's a reminder that someone they love never came home.
Freedom has never been free, and some families pay a price the rest of us can never repay. Hope knows that price better than most. In January 2020, her husband, Dustin Harrison, was killed in a terrorist attack while serving as a civilian contractor supporting the Global War on Terrorism. Their daughter, Heaven, was only two years old when she lost her daddy.
No family should ever have to walk through that kind of loss. Yet in the middle of unimaginable grief, Hope turned to God. She prayed for strength. She prayed for purpose. She prayed that somehow her family's pain could become something that honored Dustin's legacy. God answered that prayer.
Today, Heroes of Freedom Coffee is so much more than a coffee shop. It's a place where heroes are remembered, where Gold Star families know they are not forgotten, and where veterans, active-duty service members, first responders, and everyday Americans gather around a cup of coffee to remember that freedom has a face, a name, and a story.
Every photo on the wall represents someone who answered the call. Every conversation reminds us that liberty didn't come cheaply. Every customer who walks through the door helps keep those stories alive.
As someone who loves this country with all my heart, stories like Hope's remind me why we should never take our freedoms for granted. The blessings we enjoy every single day were purchased by brave men and women willing to sacrifice everything—and by families who continue carrying that sacrifice long after the headlines fade.
That's exactly why this mission matters.
Every day, thousands of people drive past Arizona City without ever knowing Heroes of Freedom Coffee exists. They never hear Dustin's story. They never meet Hope. They never learn what it truly means to be a Gold Star family. And they never get the opportunity to support a business built on honoring the heroes who gave us the freedoms we enjoy every day.
That's why we're asking for your help.
Our goal is to raise enough money for a billboard or highway sign along Interstate 10 so travelers know that just minutes off the freeway is a coffee shop unlike any other. Not because Hope wants recognition, and not because she's trying to compete with the big chains, but because every new customer is another American who learns a hero's story, pauses to remember, and helps keep this mission alive.
One billboard has the potential to introduce thousands of people every month to Heroes of Freedom Coffee and help Hope and Heaven continue serving military families, veterans, first responders, and organizations that care for those who have sacrificed so much.
If you believe our heroes should never be forgotten, if you believe faith can bring purpose from unimaginable pain, if you believe small businesses with a mission are worth supporting, and if you believe freedom is worth remembering, we invite you to join us.
Every donation makes a difference. And if you're unable to give today, sharing this campaign may be the reason someone else discovers Heroes of Freedom Coffee.
Together, we can make sure more Americans know there is a place where heroes are remembered, sacrifices are honored, and hope is poured into every cup.
Because this isn't just about coffee.
It's about remembering.
It's about gratitude.
It's about faith.
It's about family.
It's about making sure the stories of America's heroes are never forgotten.
"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." — John 15:13
Thank you for taking the time to read Hope and Heaven's story and for considering supporting this mission.
May we never forget those who gave everything so that we could live in freedom.
God bless our troops.
God bless your family.
And may God bless the United States of America.
