As a volunteer missionary who will not receive a salary for this ministry, Karen trusts God to meet her needs through the faithful support of family, friends and church. She is committed to developing more teaching resources and supporting the team that continues to train and teach people in Bible-Based Literacy in local languages across the Solomon Islands.

Karen longs to see more people empowered with the ability to read, so they can engage with the Bible in their own language and have their lives transformed by the Power of God's Word. You can be part of this mission too, by partnering with Karen through prayer, gifts, and encouragement.

About Karen Hopping’s Ministry

When God called Karen from primary school teaching into full time mission work, she lived for 12 fruitful years in the Solomon Islands and served as a Literacy Specialist with Wycliffe Bible Translators. 

She developed and taught a Bible-Based Literacy program in Solomon Islands Pijin language,

empowering hundreds - including many women and youth - to learn to read their own language and engage deeply with God’s Word.

While in the Solomons, God led Karen to adopt her precious daughter, KK. In 2018, they returned to Australia for KK’s medical care and education. In December 2024, Karen was overjoyed to hear how the Bible-Based Literacy Ministry continues to thrive.

LASI (Literacy Association of Solomon Islands), whom she trained, reported powerful testimonies of lives transformed as people can now read the Bible in their own language, lead church devotions, and share God’s Word with their families.

The Bible-based Literacy Ministry will God willing expand across the Pacific, with requests to translate the materials into other languages. Responding to this growing need - and to LASI and the Solomon Islanders request for more Bible-Based Literacy books and resources, God has clearly called Karen back to support LASI in the Bible-Based Literacy Ministry she began in 2008.

She will volunteer part-time, remotely from Australia, with short mission trips to the Solomons when needed.

Karen will be writing new Bible-Based Literacy materials and developing resources to support LASI in the Bible-Based Literacy Ministry.
