Support Tyler Chase Butler: A Call for Justice

On May 3, 2025, between 2:15 and 3:30 AM, Tyler Chase Butler, a young Black man, faced a terrifying and horrific nightmare that no one should ever endure. Tyler Chase Butler defended his life and the life of his mother from three trespassers and now he is fighting for his life in court, charged with MURDER.

Leading up to that harrowing moment, another neighbor’s home was also under siege, the masked figures kicking a metal garage door causing booms which could be heard throughout the neighborhood. The Butlers were awakened by those booms and thought they were gunshots.

Around 2:40 AM, the family dog began to bark, signaling that someone was on their property. Desperately seeking help the Butler family called the Spotsylvania County Sheriffs Department. Shockingly, after that first call, the Sheriff did not secure the premises, they came and left, leaving Tyler and his mother to fend for themselves.  

The three intimidating figures who had their faces covered, entered his fenced in back yard and attempted to break into his home through the basement door. In that harrowing moment, Tyler and his mother’s life hung in the balance, and fear soared through their veins as he realized the danger they were in.

Tyler Chase Butler and his mother feared for their lives and believed they were in imminent danger. Tyler bravely confronted the intruders on his property, urging them to leave. They refused and one reached into a backpack. Tyler was faced with an unimaginable choice and defended himself and his mother.

Tyler Chase Butler now finds himself facing a murder charge along with four other felonies. This is not merely about one young man’s fight; it’s a broader indictment of a system that too often criminalizes those who dare to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Let’s be clear: this was not a prank! No one plays ding-dong ditch at 3 a.m., especially not masked intruders attempting to kick down a back door, down a flight of stairs, behind a six-foot privacy fence. Their intentions were more than filming a TikTok prank. This was a terrifying act of violence that brought fear and pain to a peaceful and loving family.
