Jennifer Bowles is a daughter, sister, friend, colleague, and former public servant whose life and accomplishments extend far beyond the circumstances currently making headlines. A graduate of the University of Virginia, Jennifer built a professional career in mental health and human resources and made history in Martinsville, Virginia, as the youngest Black woman to serve as vice mayor. To many, she is a familiar face from her years of public service. To others, she is a lifelong friend, classmate, colleague, or loved one.
Today Jennifer is facing serious criminal charges in South Carolina, and her family is working to ensure she receives competent legal representation and fair treatment throughout the judicial process.
We recognize the seriousness of the allegations and understand that the circumstances surrounding this case have generated significant public attention and concern. However, we also believe that every individual, regardless of the allegations they face, is entitled to due process, the presumption of innocence, and meaningful access to legal representation.
Why We're Raising Funds
Jennifer's family and longtime friends have expressed significant concerns about her current mental and emotional well-being. In the period leading up to recent events, Jennifer had been navigating personal challenges and significant stress, though the full extent of what she may have been experiencing was not apparent to those around her.
While different people may have been aware of individual concerns, no one had a complete understanding of what she was going through. The circumstances that have since unfolded have raised new and urgent concerns about her mental health and well-being, leaving her loved ones searching for answers and hoping she receives the appropriate care and support.
While no confirmed diagnosis has been shared with us, her family believes it is important that any relevant medical or mental health concerns are appropriately evaluated and considered through the proper legal and medical processes.
We are not attempting to diagnose Jennifer, speculate about her state of mind during the alleged events, or suggest conclusions about her legal responsibility. We are simply advocating for her ability to receive effective representation and have her circumstances fairly evaluated.
Legal representation is particularly important when a defendant may be experiencing health or communication difficulties that complicate their ability to participate in the legal process.
Jennifer's family is working to determine her current representation and what additional legal resources may be necessary.
How Your Donations Will Help
With the approval of Jennifer's family, this fundraiser has been established exclusively to support Jennifer's legal defense and ensure access to appropriate legal representation.
Subject to GiveSendGo's requirements and approval, donations may help cover:
- Attorney Fees: Retaining qualified criminal-defense counsel and paying for representation.
- Legal Case Preparation: Permissible expenses associated with reviewing evidence, preparing filings, and developing her defense.
- Professional Evaluations: Appropriate expert consultations or evaluations arranged through legal counsel when necessary and permitted.
- Additional Defense-Related Expenses: Other approved legal costs directly associated with Jennifer's representation.
All donations will be directed to the licensed attorney or law firm actively representing Jennifer, in accordance with GiveSendGo's legal-defense fundraising requirements.
The funds will not be received or used by the fundraiser organizer or Jennifer's family for any personal expenses. A separate Care & Recovery fundraiser has been established to support eligible health-related, travel, and essential living expenses.
Why Your Support Matters
For more than three decades, I've known Jennifer personally. We met as children, grew up together, and graduated from high school together. I've watched her pursue her goals, develop a career, serve her community, and build a life that means something to the people around her.
Watching someone you've known your entire life face such serious circumstances is difficult, especially when there are still so many unanswered questions. But this fundraiser is not about asking the public to determine guilt or innocence. It is not about dismissing the seriousness of the charges or disregarding anyone who may have been affected.
It is about protecting the principle that every individual deserves a fair legal process, competent representation, and the opportunity to have all relevant circumstances appropriately considered.
Supporting someone's right to legal representation does not mean condoning any alleged wrongdoing. It means believing that justice should be based on facts, evidence, and a fair process rather than public speculation. We hope that those who know and care about Jennifer—and those who believe in the importance of due process—will consider contributing.
Every donation will help her family pursue the legal resources necessary to navigate this case. If you are unable to give financially, sharing this campaign respectfully is another meaningful way to help.
Jennifer's story is still being written. We want to ensure she has the representation necessary for her voice to be heard and her rights to be protected.
Thank you for your compassion, generosity, and support.
