For more than 30 years, I've had the privilege of calling Jennifer Bowles my friend. We met in the first grade, grew up together, and graduated from high school together.
Over the years, I've watched Jennifer accomplish incredible things. She graduated high school with honors, earned her undergrad degree from the University of Virginia then her masters from Averett University, built a successful career in mental health then human resources, and made history as the youngest Black woman to serve on City Council and as vice mayor of Martinsville, Virginia.
But beyond her education, professional accomplishments, and public service, Jennifer is a daughter, sister, friend, and someone who has spent her life building meaningful relationships within our community.
Today, Jennifer and her family are navigating an incredibly difficult situation, one that has raised serious concerns among those closest to her about her mental health and overall well-being, particularly because the behaviors described are so far removed from the Jennifer they have known throughout her life.
In the period leading up to recent events, Jennifer had been experiencing significant personal stress and had privately shared concerns about her mental and emotional well-being with only a select few people. Like many people navigating personal challenges, Jennifer did not necessarily share the same experiences or concerns with everyone in her life. Those conversations offered only glimpses into what she may have been going through, and the full extent of her struggles was not understood by her family or friends.
While we do not have all the answers or a confirmed medical diagnosis, her family and friends are deeply concerned that Jennifer may be experiencing a serious mental health crisis. We are not medical professionals, and we do not want to speculate about her condition. What we do know is that Jennifer deserves access to appropriate medical care, mental health support, and the opportunity to recover.
Unfortunately, much of the public conversation surrounding Jennifer has focused on the circumstances of her arrest rather than the concerns her loved ones have about her well-being. We recognize the seriousness of what has happened, and we are not asking anyone to dismiss those circumstances or minimize the experiences of anyone affected.
We are simply asking people to recognize that compassion, accountability, and concern for someone's mental health can coexist.
Mental health challenges do not discriminate based on education, professional achievements, social status, or the responsibilities someone carries. Sometimes the people we see as strong, accomplished, and capable are also carrying burdens that others may never fully understand. And sometimes, those struggles are not fully recognized until a situation becomes deeply concerning.
We hope Jennifer's circumstances can also serve as a reminder of the importance of listening when people express concerns about their mental health, checking on those we love, and recognizing that seeking help should never be a source of shame.
How Your Donations Will Help
With the approval of Jennifer's family, we have established this fundraiser to help provide practical support during this uncertain and difficult time.
Donations will assist with:
- Mental Health & Recovery Support: Eligible medical care, mental health treatment, counseling, and recovery-related needs as they arise.
- Family Travel & Support: Transportation, lodging, and necessary travel expenses as her loved ones work to support her.
- Essential Living Expenses: Assistance with necessary personal and household expenses during this period of uncertainty.
- Long-Term Recovery Needs: Appropriate support as Jennifer's family works to understand what resources and assistance may be needed moving forward.
All funds will be managed by Jennifer's sister, Jacqueline Strand, and used for the purposes described above. A separate fundraiser is being established for Jennifer's legal representation. Donations to this campaign will not be used for criminal-defense expenses.
A Message to Our Community
We understand that Jennifer's situation has generated questions, opinions, and conversations throughout our community and beyond; but behind every headline is a human being. Behind every difficult situation is a family trying to find its way forward.
For those of us who have known Jennifer since childhood, it has been heartbreaking to watch someone we love face such an uncertain future. We cannot pretend to have all the answers, and we cannot predict what the coming weeks and months will bring. What we can do is make sure Jennifer and her family know they are not alone.
A person's most difficult moments should not erase their humanity, their accomplishments, or the relationships they've built throughout their lifetime.
If you've known Jennifer as a friend, classmate, colleague, or public servant, we ask that you consider supporting her and her family. And even if you've never met Jennifer, but believe in the importance of mental health awareness, access to care, and treating people with compassion, we invite you to stand with her.
No contribution is too small. Every donation, every respectful share, and every word of encouragement is appreciated.
Jennifer is more than a headline. She is someone we love. And right now, she and her family need support, understanding, and hope.
Thank you for standing with Jennifer. 💜
