As many of you know, our sweet Karter is back in the hospital, and his family is facing an incredibly heavy emotional and financial mountain.
After recent labs showed elevated levels of sodium and calcium, Karter spent two weeks in the hospital while doctors tried to find the cause. Sadly, after being discharged, his weekly labs spiked right back up. Doctors have determined that his specialized keto diet is the cause. His kidneys are no longer able to filter out the excess calcium properly, and the medical team has made the difficult decision to wean him off the diet entirely.
For those who know Karter’s journey, you know how terrifying this news is. This specific diet literally saved his life when he was a baby—it was the only thing that finally got his severe seizures under control. While the doctors are confident that he will do better now that he is older, Lexie and Markus, and the rest of his family are absolutely terrified that his seizures will return. They are on an exhausting emotional roller coaster, desperately hoping that Karter can maintain seizure control without the diet, and that this change might finally help him grow and put on weight.
