I’m creating this fundraiser for one of my closest friends and coworkers, Taylor, whose life was turned upside down after a shocking and unexpected diagnosis of Stage IV metastatic colon cancer.. at just 33 years old.

If you know Taylor, you know she’s the kind of person who’s always taking care of everyone else while somehow still making everyone laugh. As a psychiatric nurse at New Hampshire Hospital, she’s spent her career helping people through some of the hardest moments of their lives. She’s the friend who checks in on everyone else before herself, and asking for help has never come naturally to her. That’s exactly why I wanted to do this for her.

Since Taylor’s diagnosis, so many people have reached out asking how they can help. I wanted to create one place where everyone can come together to support her during the fight of her life.

Here is Taylor’s story and why she truly needs our help.

Over the last few months, at just 33 years old, Taylor’s life has changed in ways none of us could have imagined.

What began as severe abdominal pain at the end of April quickly spiraled into months of hospitalizations, unimaginable pain, and heartbreaking uncertainty. She lost more than 30 pounds and eventually reached the point where she couldn’t eat or drink without excruciating pain. Everyday tasks like showering, standing, walking, and even holding a conversation became exhausting. She was forced to stop working at the job she truly loves, cancel all of her summer plans, and spent most days confined to bed, wondering why she continued getting worse.

Between May and June, Taylor was hospitalized twice and diagnosed with suspected Crohn’s disease. She underwent countless tests, received high-dose steroids and Remicade infusions, and did everything her medical team recommended. Despite all of it, she continued to deteriorate.

Just weeks later, her abdomen became so severely swollen that she looked months pregnant and could barely walk. She returned to the emergency department in Manchester, where doctors discovered another complete bowel obstruction. She was transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, where she spent a week with a nasogastric tube draining liters of fluid from her bowel while doctors tried to avoid emergency surgery.

On July 9, surgeons expected to perform a minimally invasive procedure. Instead, once they began operating, they found something far more concerning. They had to convert to an open surgery, remove part of her colon and small intestine, and create a temporary ileostomy.

The following day, her surgeon shared what they feared: this did not look like Crohn’s disease. It looked like cancer.

Taylor then faced another agonizing wait while recovering from major surgery, hoping the pathology would prove everyone wrong.

Instead, on July 15, while recovering at home, she received the phone call that changed everything.

The pathology revealed that what everyone believed was Crohn’s disease was actually Stage IV metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma. The cancer had already spread beyond her colon to her lymph nodes, omentum, and peritoneum. In a matter of minutes, her life, and the lives of everyone who loves her.. changed forever.

Taylor is now recovering from major abdominal surgery while preparing to begin chemotherapy every two weeks at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, over an hour from her home. She will soon undergo additional procedures, including placement of a chemotherapy port, frequent scans, and ongoing testing. If she responds well to treatment, she may eventually become a candidate for another major surgery called HIPEC, an intensive procedure that could offer another opportunity to fight this disease.

She also faces another difficult milestone ahead as she undergoes a chest CT scan on July 23 to determine whether the cancer has spread any further.

The emotional and physical toll has been overwhelming.. but so has the financial burden.

Taylor has already been unable to work for months. Although she would love to return, she has no clear timeline for returning. She also does not qualify for FMLA protection under her employer’s eligibility requirements, so she is now facing thousands of dollars in COBRA health insurance premiums while undergoing cancer treatment.
