Sometimes, doing the right thing can still leave your heart hurting.
My sister and I have been hoping to welcome a dog into our lives, but our first experience taught us something we never expected. We brought home a large dog from a local animal shelter, hoping we had finally found a companion to become part of our family.
Unfortunately, because I take blood thinners, the size and strength of the dog created a serious problem. Whenever she jumped on me, I would end up with painful bruises and marks. As much as we loved her, we eventually had to make the heartbreaking decision to return her to the shelter because I could not safely care for a dog of that size.
Giving her back was incredibly difficult.
We didn't want our experience to make another family hesitate to adopt her, so we made the decision to leave the adoption fee with the shelter so another person could bring her home without having to pay that cost. We also donated everything we had purchased for her so it could continue helping her or another dog in need.
Although that experience was painful, it didn't take away our desire to have a dog to love and care for.
This time, my sister and I are hoping to welcome puppies into our home. A puppy will allow us to build a bond from the beginning and, importantly, give us the opportunity to choose dogs whose eventual size and temperament are a better fit for my circumstances.
We're asking for support as we prepare for this new chapter. The funds will help us with the costs involved in bringing the puppies home and giving them everything they need to settle into a safe, loving environment.
We know there are many causes deserving of support, so every contribution means more to us than we can put into words. If you cannot donate, simply sharing our story with someone who may be able to help would mean so much.
We have already experienced the heartbreak of having to say goodbye to a dog we cared about. We're hoping this time can be different.
Thank you for reading our story, supporting us, and helping us take another step toward finding the puppies who can finally become part of our family.
