My cousin Grace, 17, was recently diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome and has been hospitalized in Green Bay for the last three weeks. She faces two months of extensive rehab in Chicago, followed by long-term care at home. The symptoms include paralysis from the neck down, inability to swallow, and nearly being put on a ventilator twice, along with many other issues, which have caused increased anxiety and fear in Grace that is slowing her recovery. The family will be seeking a second opinion this coming week which adds to the expenses.
This sudden crisis has turned Grace's and her family's lives upside down. Amanda has had to stop working indefinitely to be at Grace's side. James FMLA will run out when he is out of PTO hours. The loss of income is significant and ongoing.
Beyond the lost wages, the medical costs are mounting fast. Grace's family is facing over $10,000 in deductibles and copays alone. There are travel expenses from Michigan to Green Bay now, and soon to Chicago for her rehab. The vehicles they'll be relying on need repairs to be reliable for all those trips.
When Grace comes home, she'll need modifications to the house to support her recovery and care. The family also needs major plumbing repairs.
James and Amanda are doing everything they can, but the weight of medical bills, lost income, travel costs, vehicle repairs, and the home modifications Grace will need is overwhelming. Your support would mean so much to this family as they walk through Grace's recovery together.
The family would treasure your prayers in the following:
~Wisdom and discernment for the Jay and Amanda as they make decisions for Grace
~Wisdom for the doctors as they continue to care for Grace and those who will take on her care
~Grace, as she is in pain and struggling, that her faith will remain strong, and she will sense
the prayers and God's presence. That the spasms will stop and she will get rest.
~The family, as they walk this journey with Grace, that they have peace
~Provision for all of their needs
