Few days ago, Eric, an O'Reilly Auto Parts employee in his 50s who works as a delivery driver, suffered a life-threatening stroke. I called 911 after recognizing that he was experiencing an active stroke. People at the scene were understandably panicked and unsure what to do, so I stepped in to make sure emergency medical assistance was on the way.
Thankfully, Eric received emergency medical attention in time. I was also informed that he has a history of multiple strokes.
Unfortunately, Eric is now facing another battle: the financial burden of surviving this medical emergency.
Eric does not have health insurance. He earns approximately $15 an hour working as a delivery driver, has a mortgage to pay, and has a family depending on him. With medical bills, potential rehabilitation expenses, and the possibility of missing work during recovery, his family could face an overwhelming financial hardship.
I have also been told that workers' compensation may not cover his medical expenses, leaving Eric and his family with very limited options.
No one should have to choose between paying their mortgage, putting food on the table for their children, and receiving the medical care they need to survive.
