Daniel came to Vermont seeking a peaceful retirement and a chance to be a positive asset to Pawlet and its surrounding communities. Instead, he found himself thrust into an arduous, years-long struggle against heavy local overreach, selective enforcement, and a compounding wall of institutional pressure.
Daniel is a good man who is fighting not only for his land and his rights, but—as we can see happening in communities across our country today—he is fighting for your constitutional protections, too.
The Reality Behind the Headlines:
For years, one-sided reporting has obscured the full truth of Daniel's situation.
Incarceration Over Civil Violations: Daniel was jailed over a civil dispute stemming from an Environmental Court order—held in confinement for civil non-compliance.
Exonerated by a Jury of His Peers: When finally brought before an actual jury of his peers on criminal charges of interfering with law enforcement, Daniel was fully exonerated.
Demolition of Permitted Structures: While he was targeted by legal maneuvering, court orders were executed for the immediate demolition of his buildings—structures that were originally legally permitted before those permits were retroactively revoked years later.
Despite immense setbacks, heavy fines, and continuous public pressure, Daniel remains steadfast in defending private property, due process, and our foundational freedoms. Standing alone against deeply entrenched local systems comes at a severe personal and financial cost.
