This legal fund is on behalf of James Lehnerd; a recently retired, disabled, combat veteran. James is currently being held in a Virginia detention center awaiting trial for an incident that occurred in August of 2025 involving law enforcement officers. He has been unable to get a public defender that will meet with him or help him build his case and so any money donated will go towards getting him proper legal representation. Any leftover funds will be donated to the United Service Organization (USO) and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) as requested by James himself.
James is a combat veteran with documented PTSD, no prior criminal history, no history of mental health problems, and a devout Christian. He served in the US Army from 2007 to 2011 and deployed to Iraq during that time. His friends and family know him as a deeply empathetic and caring man who always wishes to cultivate the best in the people around him. Before his arrest, he lived with multiple animals who he loves dearly including his dog Castor.

On August 13th 2025, three officers arrived at James’ home to serve a search warrant and protective order for alleged brandishing of a firearm and trespassing that occurred several days earlier (detailed in the timeline). The officers knocked on his door and windows, cut power to his home, called out his first name only, and then reached into his home through a window that was obstructed by an AC unit and window blinds where James opened fire on them after the officer withdrew their hand. Thankfully none of the officers were killed or seriously injured. They all sustained superficial wounds from shrapnel as the bullets tore the AC unit apart but none were struck by the bullets. A stand-off followed where law enforcement was unable to make contact with James inside the house until a robot breached the building and James surrendered peacefully.
As reported by local news, the Pittsylvania Country Sheriff: “[Mike] Taylor said as the three deputies approached the door, they were met with gunfire. Initially, Taylor reported that two deputies were struck by shrapnel. He later clarified that all three deputies were injured by shrapnel. None of them were directly shot. One deputy was transported to the emergency room out of an abundance of caution.“

Friends and family believe that James was unaware that it was law enforcement officers that were knocking on his door and windows. According to James, he was asleep, having taken his prescribed sleeping medication, and was woken up at some point during the officer's knocking. If the officers had identified themselves as law enforcement early on then James was not aware by the time he was awake and alert and they failed to continue identifying themselves after cutting his power and reaching in through his window.
In addition to the information above, James’ military history and documented PTSD should have been known beforehand making the lack of identification and method of serving the warrant and protective order from the officers all the more tragic in leading to what happened that day.
At this moment, several details that may help his defense, and are not currently public, are being left out of this description as the case is ongoing and James awaits his chance to defend himself in court. We are confident in being able to prove that the version of events as alleged by law enforcement and local media are false and that James was unaware that it was law enforcement that were attempting to enter his home. It’s with all these facts that we believe James can be exonerated for what was a mistake, not a premeditated attack on law enforcement.
However, James is a disabled veteran and his VA benefits are insufficient by themselves to afford a proper lawyer who will truly advocate for him. That’s why this legal fund exists; James needs help and we believe that he will be exonerated. James, and all of his friends and family, are immensely grateful for your help. Thank you!

A brief timeline of the events leading up to the incident:
August 9th, 2025 (early morning): According to James, a neighbor informs him that there’s a predatory animal on his large rural property. He brings a handgun with him for protection as he surveys and searches the area. This is not uncommon where he lives and in the past James’ dog Castor has defended the property and other animals from coyotes. Law enforcement is called in response to James wandering around his property with a firearm. Officers arrive roughly two hours later and James is detained and questioned without issue.

August 12th, 2025 (morning): James is released and allowed to return home.
August 13th, 2025 (between 4-5pm): Local law enforcement arrive at James’ house to serve a search warrant and protective order in response to the alleged version of events on August 9th resulting in the shooting incident that led to his arrest.
