CrossFit Asia opened in Okinawa in 2008. It was the first CrossFit affiliate in Asia, and for 18 years it was home to an uncommon community: Japanese locals, Americans, service members and their families, students, office workers, parents, and competitive athletes, all training side by side.

It was never just a gym. It was where people celebrated their first pull-up, supported each other through competitions, and marked the milestones of their lives together. Members who rotated off island stayed connected for years. For many of us, CrossFit Asia was family.

In 2025, CrossFit Asia closed its doors. The messages started immediately: "Is it coming back?" "I miss CrossFit Asia." "We lost the place where everyone gathered." Every one of those messages confirmed how much this place mattered, on both sides of the language line and both sides of the Pacific.

We refused to let 18 years of community end there. In May 2026 we signed a lease for a new location in central Okinawa City. Construction began at the end of June 2026, and we are on track to reopen this summer. The new gym starts smaller than before, and that is by design: community first, growth one step at a time. Alongside CrossFit, the new space will host weightlifting, HYROX training, cardio, and community events.

Reopening takes real money: interior construction, flooring, showers and restrooms, signage, and moving and servicing the training equipment. We are investing our own funds and using financing, but we are also asking the community to help, because CrossFit Asia has always belonged to the people who built it.

The owner, Mai Urano, launched a crowdfunding campaign on CAMPFIRE, Japan's largest crowdfunding platform. That campaign is in Japanese. This GiveSendGo campaign exists so that our English-speaking family, in Okinawa and around the world, can be part of the comeback too. Same gym, same goal, two languages.

Who Is Collecting These Funds

This campaign is run by Anthony Potter, longtime CrossFit Asia community member, with the full knowledge and approval of owner Mai Urano. All funds raised here go to the CrossFit Asia reopening: construction, facilities, and equipment. The $34,000 goal here mirrors the 5,000,000 yen CAMPFIRE goal; progress on the two platforms is tracked separately but funds serve the same single project.
