Almost 10 months ago, I never imagined I’d be writing another post about my friend and fellow coach, Mike Mehring, under these circumstances.
Most of us know what it’s like to have baseball throw us a curveball. But nothing could have prepared the Mehring family for the curveball life threw at them when Mike suddenly passed away from a heart attack.
Mike was the kind of guy you wanted in your dugout. He was funny, full of life, always ready with a joke, and the kind of person who showed up for the people he cared about. He wasn’t just a coach or a friend—he was a husband, a father, and the protector of his family.
It’s been almost 10 months since Mike’s passing, and while the initial shock has faded, the reality of life without him hasn’t. The funeral may have been months ago, but the bills, responsibilities, and financial struggles that came with losing Mike didn’t end that day.
Toni and the boys are still trying to navigate life without the man who was at the center of their family. There are no timeouts in real life. No extra innings. No chance to call a timeout and regroup before the next pitch. They’ve simply had to keep stepping up to the plate, day after day, while carrying a loss that never truly goes away.
That’s where a team comes in.
As someone who had the privilege of knowing Mike and coaching alongside him, I’m asking our community to rally around his family once again. Mike spent his time showing up for others. Now it’s our turn to show up for his family.

Mike may be gone, but he will always have a place in our dugout, in our memories, and in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
