On May 8, 2026, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that a Democratic-led attempt to authorize partisan gerrymandering of congressional districts was unconstitutional. The Court struck down the voter-approved amendment because the General Assembly violated Article XII, Section 1 of the Virginia Constitution when it placed the measure on the ballot. This landmark decision nullified the April 21 special election results and kept the existing fair maps in place — a clear victory showing that Virginia courts will uphold the state constitution and protect the rights of every Virginian when the people demand it.
