This past Tuesday, my precious five year old golden retriever, Maya began showing signs of pain with walking in her legs. She was also distressed, and not eating. I took her to the animal hospital, and was told that based off of a previous xray that she has arthritis in her hip, but it looked like a possible back injury, and she would need a $7000 MRI. I immediately called my sister and her husband, who have a wonderful family friend, who is a vet, and owns Towne And Country Vet in Manalapan, NJ. He saw our sweet Maya right away. He did an Xray of her hips, which showed hip dysplasia in one of her hips. We discussed medication, and the diagnosis, and went home. Within two hours of being home, Maya’s legs stopped working. She could not control her urine/fecal movements. I called my sister, and we immediately called Larry, our now vet. He told us to bring Maya in, and said that he believes that he knows what it is. After looking at, and manipulating Maya, he confirmed that she has FCE…Fibrocartilaginous Embolism. It is an embolism in the spine, usually from exercise, or trauma. Though we are not exactly sure how this happened to our precious girl. There is a fifty percent chance that she will regain her legs/feeling. Usually, it can occur any time from five days, to several weeks, or more. To say that we are heartbroken 💔 is an understatement. We are praying for a full recovery, yet trusting the Lord in His will, and timing. This is not going to be an easy road for our sweet girl, or our family. I have already taken time from work. Thank God for my PTO, and an understanding nursing supervisor. We are trying to figure out how best to care for our precious Maya. This is also going to be costly. We will now require diapers, a possible wheelchair, and any additional therapy, such as red light therapy, hydrotherapy, and physical therapy.
