Hi, my name is Sunnie Helling, and I am a Social Science major at Lewis-Clark State College. Next summer (May 2027), I have the opportunity to study abroad in Meknes, Morocco, through my school with the WorldStrides program. I am asking for your help to make this life-changing experience possible.

For much of my life, I felt like I was simply trying to survive. I grew up around addiction and eventually faced my own struggles with addiction and unhealthy relationships. Everything changed when I entered a women's and children's recovery center at the Union Gospel Mission, where I lived for 24 months. That experience gave me hope, stability, and a chance to completely rebuild my life.

During my time in recovery, I earned my GED. With the encouragement of people who believed in me, I enrolled at North Idaho College in the summer of 2022. Although I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to study, I was excited for the opportunity to learn. In May 2025, I graduated with my associate degree in General Studies and a certificate in Communications. After graduation, I transferred to Lewis-Clark State College, where I am now working toward my bachelor's degree in Social Sciences. 

My education has completely changed the way I see the world. I've learned that every person has a story, and every culture has something to teach us. Instead of seeing life as simply right or wrong, I've learned to appreciate different perspectives and experiences.

That is one of the biggest reasons I want to study abroad. Since I was young, I have dreamed of experiencing another part of the world. Through the WorldStrides program, I will have the opportunity to travel to Meknes, Morocco, where I hope to work with programs that support women and children while learning from the local community. I don't want to go simply as a tourist—I want to listen, learn, serve, and understand life from another perspective. I believe seeing another culture firsthand will give me a more multifaceted view of people and help me become more compassionate, understanding, and effective in whatever career I choose.

This trip comes at an important time in my life. Next summer is my last summer before finishing my bachelor's degree, and I truly believe this experience will help me discover exactly how I can use my education to serve others. In my heart, I know this is something I am meant to do.

Your donation will go directly toward the costs of participating in the study abroad program, including program fees, lodging, transportation, and other required travel expenses. Unfortunately, my financial aid does not cover these costs, so I am relying on the generosity of others to help make this opportunity possible.

A few years ago, I never imagined I would be in college, let alone preparing to study abroad. Recovery gave me a second chance, education gave me confidence, and now I hope to continue growing in ways I never thought possible.
