Help Keep Fire for Effect Athletics Alive

My name is James, and together with my wife I own Fire for Effect Athletics in Philadelphia. We opened our doors in December 2017. We are a functional fitness gym—similar to CrossFit in some ways, different in others—built around real strength, real movement, and real community.

The name is deliberate. I am a combat veteran. I served 22 years in the infantry (1999–2021) and completed multiple combat deployments. The physical and mental toll of that service left me with injuries and challenges that had doctors talking about back surgery. Functional fitness changed the trajectory. It kept me out of the operating room and gave me back strength, mobility, and a sense of purpose I was told I might lose. That experience became the foundation of this gym.

Fire for Effect is meant to be a beacon for veterans in our community. As someone who carries the complications that often follow service—whether behavioral and mental health struggles, chronic aches and pains, or the lasting effects of wounds—I understand those realities. Veterans are our special interest group, the people I especially want to reach and serve. At the same time, we are by no means limited to the veteran community. Anyone who is willing to work hard and improve their physical health—and very often their behavioral health as well—is welcomed through the door.

Over the last eight-plus years we have watched members rewrite their stories. Expectant and postpartum mothers rebuilding strength and confidence. People training through chemotherapy. Three couples who met here and later married. Friend groups that formed under our roof and still train together. People who arrived limited by pain, diagnosis, or life’s weight and left stronger than they thought possible. These are not marketing lines. They are the daily reality of this gym.

Right now the economy is hitting us hard from every direction. Utility costs have climbed sharply. Ongoing city water-main work repeatedly blocks the entrance to our parking lot, making it difficult for members to reach us. Surrounding demolition and construction for future housing have pushed many residents out of the neighborhood while the new residents are still years away. When money gets tight, gyms are often the first “luxury” people cut—even though for many of our members this place is the opposite of a luxury. It is the thing keeping them healthy, connected, and moving forward.

We have never asked for outside help in nearly nine years. Swallowing that pride is hard. We are in the early stages of getting listed with GSA, which could open meaningful long-term opportunities, but government processes take time. In the meantime we need help simply to keep the lights on and the doors open so the people who rely on this place do not lose it.

If you are able to give—any amount—you are helping a veteran-owned small business that has quietly served its community for years continue serving. If you cannot give, sharing this page still matters.

Thank you for reading our story. We are grateful for every person who has trained here, supported us, and believed that functional fitness can change lives. We are asking for help so we can keep doing that work. Thank you for your consideration and God bless you.
