Bringing Sophie Home, Fight for Parental Rights

Every night Arlene and I lie awake thinking of our daughter Sophie—the little girl whose laughter once filled our home, whose hand we held as we taught her to pray, whose moral conscience we carefully formed in the light of our Catholic faith. We raised her with love, with truth, and with the deep conviction that parents, not the state, are entrusted by God with the care of their children. Yet Massachusetts seeks to give her testosterone. The state has no right to her medical care. That sacred duty belongs to us, her parents. From the very beginning our First Amendment right to raise our child according to our religion has been denied, and the ache of that injustice lives in our hearts every single day.

Did we forget to tell you what life has been like for Sophie since she was taken into DCF care? She has been hospitalized at least twice. Against our will, she is housed with boys. Heavy antipsychotic medicine has left her suffering from brain fog, dulling the bright mind we once knew. And still they claim she has “free will.” How free is a child who is medicated, displaced, and separated from the only family who has ever truly loved and protected her?

With the steadfast help of legal counsel, especially Vernadette Broyles, we are fighting in court to bring Sophie home—whole, safe, and surrounded once more by the family who has always loved her. Our legal bills already stand at $150,000. We need another $100,000 to finish this battle. At the same time we are working to change the laws so that thousands of other parents never have to endure the same heartbreak of watching their child pulled away from the faith and the love that formed them.

When Sophie returns home, she will need patient, loving help and significant support for her education as she works toward the day she can stand on her own. The hospitalizations, the placement against our wishes, the medication that clouds her mind—these are the reasons she needs us now more than ever. She is our daughter. She is deeply loved. The thought of her alone, without the guidance and warmth of the home that raised her, breaks our hearts.
