Our Story: Brewing a Dream for Our Community
Hi, friends! We are John and Maggie Lawler and for several years, we have dreamed of creating more than just a coffee shop—a warm, inclusive place where everyone feels at home. This dream has been moved up on our timeline due to the unexpected loss of John’s job of 24 years when his company decided to downsize and off-shore his position. In the months that have followed, we have done a lot of praying and seeking God for direction as finding another job hasn’t been fruitful. His current retirement savings will only go so far to make ends meet for our family, so there is no better time than now to begin a new business venture. We believe so much in this vision that God has given us that we’re willing to cash out his 401(k) to move in the direction He wants us to go. Without a current steady income stream for John, we cannot get bank financing for the purchase of the building. (The coffeehouse will eventually be that steady income stream!) While this business will serve as John’s “retirement,” it’s even more about leaving a legacy for our family and being a testimony in walking in faith.
Village Grounds Coffeehouse is our vision for a space that lifts spirits and fosters connection in a world that can feel rushed and disconnected. Imagine walking into a cozy spot in Bremen, Ohio where the aroma of ethically sourced coffee greets you, and the vibe invites you to stay. Whether you’re a student needing a quiet study nook, a parent craving a friendly meetup, or someone looking for a moment of calm, Village Grounds Coffeehouse is for you. We’re designing a space for open-mic nights, small group Bible studies, book clubs, and other events—because community thrives when we gather.
This dream partly comes from our own experience. We have hosted countless coffee meetups that have turned strangers into friends. But the dining table can only fit so many! In Bremen, where locals crave a coffee spot and place to meet with one another, we see a gap Village Grounds can fill. Our values drive us: hiring locally with a focus on second chances, partnering with area nonprofits for give-back days, and sourcing fair-trade beans to support global farmers.
This isn’t just a business—it’s a mission to create a welcoming space for all. But launching in today’s economy means we need your help to make it real. Your support will turn this vision into a place where stories are shared, ideas spark, and neighbors become family.
How Your Support Will Make It Happen
Every dollar gets us closer to opening day. Here’s how we’ll use the $40,000:
• Equipment & Setup (~$20,000): Espresso machines, grinders, ice maker, blenders, and inviting furniture for that “home away from home” feel.
• Renovations & Permits (~$10,000): Interior additions to the shop and all permits required for food service.
• Inventory & Launch (~$7,000): Initial stock of beans, pastries, and branded mugs—plus a grand opening with free coffee for the first 100 visitors.
• Marketing & Operations Buffer (~$3,000): Flyers, social media ads, and a community-focused launch event.
Once the seller accepts our offer to purchase the building, that will have us ALL-IN, financially. It leaves little for start-up costs and anything unexpected that might arise.
