Help Carmen Heal, Rebuild Her Life, and Walk Again
A story of survival, faith, strength, and the hope of a new beginning.
There are some people who face more hardships in a lifetime than most could ever imagine. My dear friend Carmen is one of those people. Her story is one of unimaginable pain, extraordinary resilience, and a determination to keep fighting, even when life has given her every reason to give up.
I am starting this GiveSendGo fundraiser for Carmen because, after everything she has endured, she needs help, hope, and the support of people who care.
A Fight Against Stage 4 Cancer
Carmen was diagnosed with Stage 4 cervical cancer, one of the most frightening battles anyone can face. Through that fight, she found the strength to persevere, and she has been in remission since 2018. That alone is a testament to her courage and determination to live.
But her battle was far from over.
A Horrific Attack That Changed Her Life
In April 2019, while leaving work during the day, Carmen was attacked from behind at gunpoint by a complete stranger. She was kidnapped, strangled until she lost consciousness, and sexually assaulted.
No one should ever have to endure such terror. Yet Carmen survived.
As if the trauma itself were not enough, when the case went to court, her attacker walked out immediately behind her. To this day, she has never seen her attacker serve time in a jail cell. The experience left her to carry the weight of a deeply traumatic event while trying to find a way forward.
Despite this unimaginable experience, Carmen kept going.
A Devastating Car Accident in 2024
Just when you might think someone had already endured more than enough, tragedy struck again.
In 2024, Carmen was involved in a horrific car accident that left her fighting for her life. She was placed on life support for three days.
When she finally woke up, she faced a long and painful road to recovery. Her injuries included a broken pelvis, a right hip replacement, a badly bruised knee with internal injury, and torn ligaments and other tears along her right leg.
Carmen spent 15 months on bed rest. Imagine going from living your life independently to having even the simplest movements become a daily challenge. Imagine having to fight to regain the ability to walk after everything you have already survived.
Today, Carmen is finally beginning physical therapy, working toward walking again without a walker or cane. Every step forward represents another battle fought and another reason to hope.
Her goal is to become healthy and independent again, to regain the life she had before these devastating events changed everything.
Two Years Without an Income
The physical injuries and long recovery have also taken a tremendous financial toll. Carmen has been unable to work for two years and has had no income coming in from employment.
While she focuses on healing, everyday expenses continue. Housing, utilities, food, transportation, medical and rehabilitation needs, and other basic necessities do not stop simply because someone is fighting to recover.
After surviving cancer, a violent attack, and a life-threatening accident, Carmen is now facing the additional stress of financial insecurity. She needs the opportunity to focus on her health and recovery without the constant fear of how she will afford life’s necessities.
