Please Help Save My Parents’ Home

My parents, Wayne and Tara Floyd, purchased my childhood home almost 20 years ago. It's where my brother and I were raised, where our family celebrated birthdays and holidays, and where their grandkids love to visit.

Regrettably, my parents can no longer keep up with the scope and scale of repairs needed to save it. They can’t sell it in its current condition - they can’t even afford to rent a new house. All they really want is the opportunity to make the necessary repairs so the home is safe again.

Their home, purchased just 1 year before the housing crisis in 2008, developed multiple breaks in the roof - severe enough that water leaks into the home every time it rains, and 1 part of the ceiling continually drips water. Additionally, serious plumbing issues largely caused by poor installation during construction have caused water damage to one bathroom, multiple walls, and wide spans of flooring. Water from both sources has traveled throughout the home, leaving both the upstairs and downstairs floors in need of replacement, and we have now confirmed the presence of mold. These aren’t simple cosmetic problems or relatively simple fixes; they’re systemic structural health and safety hazards to anyone living in the home.

As these issues developed with escalating severity, my parents have been facing significant medical challenges. Over the past several years, my mother’s health has declined because of multiple serious autoimmune diseases and related medical complications. There have been times when severe pain, inflammation, infections, and ongoing treatments have left her unable to work in any capacity and greatly limited what she can do each day. For my mother, daily activities that many people take for granted have become challenges, and take great effort to overcome.

My father has spent the past decade continuing to work as hard as he can every day to provide for his family despite living with severe chronic pain; both of his knees are in desperate need of replacements, and a combination of medical and monetary barriers have prevented him from getting the surgery he desperately needs. In addition to caring for my mother, he also helps care for my almost 90 year old grandmother as she courageously battles Stage IV lung cancer, requiring him to frequently take time away from work. 

Like so many families facing long-term illness, the financial burden has become overwhelming. Their savings are exhausted with no retirement funds to speak of and they’ve used every available credit card but they continue to struggle under mounting medical expenses; a portion of my father’s paychecks is currently being garnished because of these ever-growing debts. My brother and I have young families of our own, and we can only ever devote so much time and money to help in whatever ways we can before we fall into debt as well.

My parents never imagined they would reach a point where they needed to ask for help like this. As difficult as it is to ask, I’m reaching out to our community for support. Every donation, regardless of the amount, will go directly toward replacing the roof, repairing the plumbing, addressing the mold, and restoring the damaged walls and flooring so the home can once again be safe. Some of these funds will also go towards clearing a few of the debts they’ve accrued over this decade-long battle of repairs and health crises.
