Working Away, Dreaming of Home

I work away from home for weeks at a time to provide for my family. Every time I leave, I know I'll miss dinners, bedtimes, weekends, and those ordinary little moments with my children that you don't realize mean so much until you're not there for them.

I do it because I want to give my family the best future I can.

Like a lot of Canadian families, we're trying to get out from under debt, get ahead financially, and hopefully one day own a home of our own.

I have a good job and I'm grateful for it. But even when you work hard and earn a steady income, sometimes it can feel like you're still not getting ahead.

Over time, we've accumulated debt that has made it difficult to move forward and begin seriously saving toward our first home. We're making payments, cutting back where we can, and I'm looking for other ways to bring in extra money alongside my regular job.

We're not looking for someone else to fix everything for us.

We're going to keep working at this regardless.

But I decided there was no harm in putting our story out there and asking whether anyone might be willing to give us a little help along the way.

I've set this fundraiser at $10,000. Any money raised will first go toward reducing our debt. Getting that debt down would free up more of our own income each month so we can finally start putting more toward our bigger goal — buying our first home.

We aren't looking for anything extravagant. We just want a place we can call ours, where our children can grow up and where all those weeks spent working away from home feel like they were building toward something.

If you choose to contribute, whether it's $5, $10, or anything at all, thank you. It genuinely means a lot to our family.

And if you're not in a position to give, that's completely okay.

We're going to keep working, keep paying things down, and keep moving toward that front door.

Maybe with a little help, we'll get there sooner.
