Rick Knutson Memorial Scholarship Fund

Richard “Rick” Knutson was born and raised on a farm in Polo, IL. During his time at PCHS, Rick was deeply involved in FFA, and his love for farming remained innate in him throughout his life. He was a devoted athlete, participating in wrestling and football. Rick was a member of the graduating class of 1998. Determined to remain involved and contribute back, he became a member of the Polo School Board in 2021.

His intelligence and creativity reached far beyond his 26 years in the U.S. Navy, his career with the Byron Clean Energy Center and his role as Nuclear Safety Engineer for the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. Rick was studious, a true engineer and could find a way to fix just about anything.

There is no doubt, even after living a life so large, his most cherished accomplishment was his children. Annalise and Max were his world, and being a father meant more to him than anything.

His magnanimous personality will forever be cherished by his children, family and friends. Rick never met a stranger and would have given the shirt off his back (if he was wearing one), to anyone…right after holding the door for them. Chivalry was always alive in Rick’s presence. He was funny with a deceivingly, dry sense of humor. Rick radiated positivity; he was energetic and thoughtful, always wearing his ever-present smile and a twinkle in his eye. He lived life his way: simple and outdoors. He loved farming, fishing, canoeing, hunting, looking for mushrooms, gardening, riding his motorcycles and snowmobiling.

This scholarship will honor Anna and Max, Rick's memory and his commitment to the Polo Community School District. The goal is to keep this scholarship going until his children graduate, ensuring his legacy of dedication and involvement lives on in Polo for years to come.

Applicants must demonstrate qualities Rick was known for: kindness, integrity, willingness to help others and the innate ability to make others laugh. The student should be devoted to making a difference in this world whether attending college or trade school, enlisting in the military, pursuing a career in agriculture, or participating in an accredited certification program. Applicants should demonstrate consistent academic effort and meaningful involvement in school or community activities, reflecting Ricks commitment to service and connection. This year’s recipient will directly receive $500 during the Honor’s Night Awards Ceremony.
