Help Keith Falconer Fight Esophageal Cancer

On February 6, after experiencing some slight difficulty swallowing when eating certain foods, my dad went to get an endoscopy for what we thought was a hiatal hernia. Our world was changed after the doctor found a significant tumour on his lower esophageal wall and diagnosed him with esophageal cancer, a very aggressive cancer that is usually only found at a later stage.  He immediately went for a CT and PET scan to see if it had spread to any organs.  By the grace of God, the cancer has turned out to still be only local, which means that it can still be approached with a curative intent.  He has been recommended to undergo what is called perioperative therapy, which looks like 2 months of FLOT chemotherapy followed by an esophagectomy after a month of rest, and finished with another 2 months of chemotherapy.  While in a meeting with his oncologist, my dad was strongly recommended to also pair this treatment with 8 shots of the immunotherapy drug Durvalumab.  The oncologist cited a global clinical trial called the Matterhorn trial in which patients who combined their FLOT chemotherapy with this immunotherapy treatment had significantly increased survivability and cancer recurrence prevention.  My parents have made the decision to do the immunotherapy, with the only negative being the out-of-pocket cost, with each shot of the drug being about $13,000.  I know that I’ve been approached by several loved ones looking for ways in which they can help, so I thought I would set this page up just as a resource not only for updates on my dad‘s battle and journey with this cancer, but also as a way to give in whichever way you feel led, whether it’s through earnest prayer or financial support.  My family has been overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support we have already received from our church family, and we just want to express our gratitude for each person that has been praying for my dad.  Please continue to uphold our family as my dad is currently undergoing chemotherapy and battling with all the negative effects from the treatment.
