Please Help Amanda Obtain Legal Representation

Community members who know and love Amanda Taylor Burchett are trying to raise $5,000 to cover a one-time attorney fee, to fight false charges of felony child abuse brought against her by the state of Oklahoma and initiated by her soon-to-be ex-husband.

Although Oklahoma State law would allow Amanda to be eligible for a Public Defender, a local judge denied her this right because community members and close friends were able to pull together the money to have her released from jail.

Oklahoma law says posting bond cannot be the sole factor in determining eligibility for appointed counsel and financial circumstances must be considered. The judge nevertheless told her that if she did not obtain an attorney, he would consider her a flight risk, return her to jail, and increase her bail.

She has met with private attorney Jason May, who has agreed to take her case if she can raise the $5,000 needed for his flat fee. Jason May would protect Amanda's rights, investigate all supposed evidence, and present her legal defense in court. Every dollar raised here is set up to go straight to Jason May for Amanda's legal defense.

My name is Anna Flatt. Amanda has been my tenant for over five years, and over that time I have come to know her and her family well. She is a caring person who has worked with children at a local church, and she is pursuing her bachelors degree in Community Advocacy and Social Policy.

Amanda had also very recently been approved to adopt an 18-month-old foster child who had been in her care since he was just over a week old. That child was also removed from her home. I cannot imagine how painful it must be to be separated from all four children while facing such serious charges.
