HOLLYWOOD LOVES TRANS PEOPLE

Hollywood has a strong commitment to representing the stories of marginalized and minority identities. For years, they have gone to great efforts to include gay, lesbian, trans and other "sexual minorities" in their creative lineup: from Will & Grace, to Eye for the Straight Guy, RuPaul's Drag Race, TransParent and so on.

Gen Z has especially grown up in a world where icons, superstars and their favorite shows and movies cast a spotlight on trans characters like Jules (Hunter Schafer) from HBOMax's Euphoria, Elle (Yasmin Finney) on Netflix's Heartstopper, and Nia Nal (Nicole Mains) on The CW's Supergirl.

Social media also takes its lead from Hollywood, as most of the cultural ground of memes, TikToks, Instagram influencers and is rooted in movies and TV shows. And when Hollywood finds a talent like Dylan Mulvaney, they use their resources to provide a platform, opportunities, and affirmation to Dylan's journey and identity. 

WHAT ABOUT DETRANS STORIES?

When it comes to detransitioner stories, it's the opposite. Zero characters. Zero storylines. Zero appearances on TV shows and movies, let alone the nightly news.

It doesn't even matter why or why not Hollywood is ignoring these stories. It certainly does cause one to wonder. The entertainment industry of 30 years ago would have featured at least one detrans story for no other reason than the trauma, drama and ripped-from-the-headlines sensationalism factor. Law & Order would have had one episode with a detrans storyline. Gossip Girl might have featured at least one character who was backtracking from being trans. A reality TV show would have been produced at the very least.

Yet, today. Zero Detrans.

A LIGHT IN THE DARK

But not let's judge or curse Hollywood. Instead, we've decided to educate, challenge and light a candle in the dark.

We're taking the detrans stories to Hollywood itself—through screenings of various documentaries showing detransitioner journeys along with the struggles of parents who are struggling with the same issues in their families.

Currently we are launching our film series with Art Club, a film about a Colorado mother who discovered that her daughter's after school art club was actually a cover for her daughter's secret life as a trans boy at school. Among other titles coming soon are Daily Wire's "Identity Crisis" and PragerU's "DETRANS."

ABOUT THE FUNDS RAISED

180 Shift exists to initiate a greater conversation with Gen Z about the social and cultural issues affecting them, helping them understand the power of their vote and how it impacts their personal lives, family and community. Headed up by two Gen Z Latinas living in Los Angeles, Tara and Ellie. Tara is a young wife, mom of two and filmmaker, and Ellie is a college student, community volunteer and developing journalist.
