My name is (Asha) Astrid Cybèle Møller, and I’ve undertaken a deeply personal project: creating a sculpture to honor the quiet heroism of my grandfather, Karl Klausen Møller.

During World War II, my grandfather was a humble Danish sailor who became an unsung hero of the Danish Resistance. Using his small sailboat, he risked his life to ferry Jewish families across the Oresund Strait to safety in neutral Sweden. He continued this work in secret until Nazi suspicion escalated.

One day, while he was away on a mission, German soldiers came to the family home. They ordered my grandmother, Ellen, to take only one possession and flee with their three children—including my father, Klaus, who was just six years old. Ellen saved a single item: a painting of their house. After their escape, the home was set ablaze. That painting is now a cherished family heirloom, a fragile but powerful symbol of survival.

My grandfather never asked for recognition, but I believe his courage deserves to be remembered. Through this project, I hope to not only preserve his legacy but also reconnect with the descendants of the families he helped rescue. I am collaborating with a sculptor mentor (who has requested to remain anonymous) who shares my belief in art as a vessel for truth and remembrance. Together, we are creating a bronze bust of Karl Klausen Moller, which we hope will one day be displayed at the Danish Resistance Museum in Copenhagen. It will serve as a testament to human bravery and a reminder that even ordinary people can do extraordinary things when hope is at stake.
