Save Kicaster Creek

Imagine walking onto your back porch to enjoy your morning coffee and listen to the birds chirping while the smell of wastewater wafts through the air? Rather than watching the deer and wild turkeys feed in their natural environment in your backyard, you see and hear a giant monstrosity processing 250,000 gallons of solid waste per day. That effluent will be discharged in the middle of your neighborhood into the *dry* Kicaster Creek bed. Nobody would not want this in their backyard and neither do we.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?

A developer has applied for a permit with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to build a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) between the Estates at Shannon Ridge and CR 320. In addition, this project will impact ALL properties along Kicaster Creek, Bentwood, Abrego Lake, Freasier Ranch, and all properties sharing boundaries with the 255 acres owned by this developer. This facility would discharge 250,000 gallons of treated effluent (from 1,020 lots measuring 40 ft x 120 ft) every day into Kicaster Creek, which is dry and no longer a defined creek.

The proposed sewer line would cut through Kerry Lane (1.0 mile northeast, then 630 feet southeast), Tipperary Lane (525 feet northeast), Blarney Road (640 feet southeast), Shannon Ridge Drive (1,300 feet east), ending at the low water crossing at Kicaster Creek. From there, the developer claims effluent would flow an additional 4.2 miles to the San Antonio River — however, due to elevation changes and undefined creek boundaries — this is false. The wastewater would stagnate locally.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

The WWTP would bring constant, noxious odors, noise and light pollution, chemical and air pollution, and wildlife displacement. The effluent discharge would cause:

  • Unsafe conditions at the low water crossing (vehicles & pedestrians)
  • Stagnant wastewater pooling in a dry creek bed
  • Mosquito and pest infestations (diseases: Zika, West Nile, Encephalitis, heartworms in dogs)
  • Waterborne diseases (e.coli, leptospirosis, giardia) harmful to humans, livestock, and wildlife
  • Invasive bacteria and algae overgrowth, leading to putrid odors
  • Contamination of private wells, the Carrizo/Wilson Aquifer, and drinking water supply
  • Significant harm to public health, property values, and community quality of life

OUR PURPOSE?

We are committed to preventing developments like this from destroying Kicaster Creek and surrounding properties and natural resources. We will use every available course of action to protect Kicaster Creek and safeguard our community. Together, we can protect Kicaster Creek — and the health, homes, and environment of everyone who lives here.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

A group of concerned citizens founded this nonprofit to protect Kicaster Creek and our surrounding natural environment. We are asking for your donations to help pay for legal representation, licensed drone services to capture accurate topography of the dry creek bed, print materials, nonprofit filings, advocacy efforts, and other expenses related to this fight. We are in the process of filing necessary nonprofit paperwork with the IRS, which makes your donation tax deductible. Save Kicaster Creek's EIN is 39-4207112. We will update with our 501c(3) letter soon. Thank you so much for your generous donation!
