Start the conversation about Elder Abuse

My name is Sara. Before my life morphed into a nightmare scenario, I felt I was living a nearly perfect life. I was happily married with two beautiful children and working in a profession, I absolutely loved, I lived every day to the fullest. I worked hard, played hard, and made a great living. I was extremely happy and felt very positive about the future.

What a contrast my life is today to that other life I had 10 years ago. Today I am blocked from all work opportunities, being constantly bullied through medical insurance targeting and lied about by corrupt and greedy family members. At the age of only 41, I became a victim of Elder Abuse.

In 2015, at the age of only 41, my then husband and young family and I, poured all our savings and assets into relocating to a beautiful Northern Beaches suburb, to be near my immediate family, because I loved them. My brother, resentful of the proximity between my parents and I, undermined my life and my relationships, isolating me through an infinite variety of coercive control tactics. Left all alone by everyone other than my abuser, I had to find the courage to uncover the circumstances that led to my situation, to start the conversation about my brother's Inheritance Impatience.

Please support my attempt to write a novel which is based on my true story. I am not alone. There are many women just like me, wondering how they got here. The only way to stop this tragedy is to start the conversation about Elder Abuse: the unspoken epidemic. Elder Abuse I discovered, is NOT only the abuse of old people. It is the term used to describe currently the intentional mistreatment, neglect and/or exploitation of young mothers who are inheritance disabled, the medically disabled and older people of course, by a trusted person. Indeed so subtly does the abuse begin, that many wonder whether they really are victims at all. As the abuse escalates, things become so horrifying that victims are too traumatized to be able to relive their abuse, by talking about it. From the psychological - deliberate embarrassment, making someone feel incapable, removing decision making powers or social interactions; to the financial, such as power of attorney misuse - abuse by a trusted person can be that much harder to talk about.

So, as you can imagine, my book is turning out to be an enthralling novel at once a domestic drama and an intently observed portrait of present-day Sydney, in all its vitality and corruption. Compassionate, moving and rich in details of character and place, my unforgettable novel charts the journey of a moral heart, in a turbulent world of change.
