Twenty years ago, Robert was just 19 years old when his kidneys suddenly failed. After years on dialysis, he received the gift of a kidney transplant at age 25. Thanks to that gift, he was able to build a life over the next twenty years filled with work, family, and hope.

For twenty years, that kidney carried him through life.

Now, after years of battling chronic rejection and the long-term effects of immunosuppressive medications, Robert is facing the biggest challenge of his life.

Doctors have told us he now needs a combined liver and kidney transplant.

Before he can even be listed for transplant, his severe hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) must be treated because it makes major surgery extremely high risk. What was already a complicated medical journey has become one involving multiple specialties, countless appointments, procedures, and difficult decisions.

Despite everything, Robert continues to face each day with humor, determination, and an incredible will to keep going. If you've ever met him, you know he would much rather be helping someone else than asking for help himself.

As anyone who has experienced organ transplantation knows, the transplant itself is only part of the journey. There will be travel, temporary housing, medications, time away from work, and many expenses that insurance simply doesn't cover.
