There are some people you meet in life who quietly work harder than anyone you know, never complain, and never ask for help.

Dwayne Edgar is one of those people.

John and I met Dwayne years ago during a trip to Jamaica. He did not work for the resort. He was simply a local father with a small fishing boat, a kind smile, and a dream of building a better life for his daughter.

Every day he worked on the beach. He dove for fresh conch. He cooked authentic jerk chicken over open flames. He took visitors out on his boat to teach them how to fish and show them the beauty of the island. Every dollar he earned was saved carefully.

Over the years, we watched him build his home one brick at a time. Not with loans. Not with handouts. With tips. With long days in the sun. With sacrifice.

Each year we visited, he had added something new. A wall. A roof. Finally windows. Last year he proudly moved into the home he built with his own hands. The joy on his face when he showed us those windows is something I will never forget.

He saved for years to buy a small car so he could take his daughter to school instead of walking. That car was not just transportation. It was dignity. It was security. It was proof that hard work pays off.

Then Hurricane Melissa made landfall in October 2025.

In a matter of hours, everything he built over years was destroyed.

His car was thrown and completely totaled.

His boat and boat shed was crushed.

Flood waters filled his home and ruined nearly everything inside.

The livelihood he depended on disappeared overnight.

For weeks there was no electricity and no cell service. We could not reach him. We watched the devastation on the news and prayed.

When he finally found a small government internet access point miles away and called us, we saw the destruction behind him. And yet his words were simple.

We are alive. God is good.

He was not angry. He was not bitter. He was grateful that his daughter (and goats) survived.

He has received limited assistance, but it is only enough to repair part of his home so his daughter has a roof over her head. He must now rebuild from nothing.

To replace his car and begin restoring his ability to work and provide again, he needs approximately 4,700 US dollars.

This is not a man who asks for help. It took months before he would even allow us to share his story.
