The Story Behind "Raising Phoenix"

I remember that day like it was yesterday. I walked out to my old Ford F-350 ambulance, nicknamed "The Phoenix," parked in the Tucson sun. It's been two years since she last hit the road as my off-grid mobile home and office. Every time I approached her, all charged up with dreams of freedom, independence—but lately, just a sinking feeling that time is running out.

I owe it to The Phoenix for being more than just a truck. She's been my sanctuary on wheels after losing everything else in life—no savings, only $1,391 coming monthly from the VA disability for support. And now, with shelter potentially at stake due to delays with VA housing, she stands as one of my last hopes.

The Phoenix needs some love and major repairs before we can hit the road again. It's a daunting task: around $6,000 to $10,000 for engine diagnostics/fixes, new tires, batteries (for everything from vehicle electronics to solar power), suspension overhaul, and interior work—not including annual upfront fees totaling $400 if I want to lock in that cheaper rate.

I've got the back injury and 60% service-connected PTSD/spinal issues for a reason: it makes strenuous labor impossible. That means hiring help is essential to breathe life into The Phoenix again. And every day she sits, my heart sinks further—both from worry about her and fear that we might not have enough time left.
