Our Family Story

Hi, my name is Jody Capshaw. I am a husband of 25 years and a dad to five awesome kids. For years, I worked hard to build a stable career, eventually moving into a General Foreman position over custom and production- framing homes. I loved my job and thought our future was secure. But out of nowhere, the company went out of business. I immediately started applying for jobs and asking friends for advice. None of this was my original plan. It was simply an emergency path. With a wife and kids depending solely on me, I couldn’t afford to sit still. I had to keep a roof over our heads.

How We Got Cheated

A trusted friend connected me with a local property manager who owns over 300 rental properties and Airbnbs. He needed help keeping some of the units safe, livable, and up to code. We agreed on a price for my labor, and he promised any out-of-pocket materials would be fully reimbursed. I trusted him and went to work. But right from the first big job, his payments came up short. He claimed he just needed more time to pay. Wanting to build a good relationship, I kept working full-time for him. Under his suggestion, I even found a few guys to help me with the bigger projects.

A $40,000 Loss

Then my wife reviewed the invoices. We were couldn't believe most of them weren't paid in full. At that point, he owed us around $20,000 for labor and materials. When I confronted him, he promised to pay the balance soon. I chose to trust his word. But by the one-year mark, we were constantly in the red. Everything I made was going right back into the next project he wanted done. I kept working only because he owed me so much money. I was worried if I stopped, he would never pay me. Then my truck broke down. After letting him know, I made several attempts to get him to pay the invoices with no response, he eventually emailed me, told me to take him to court. Then he blocked me. In total, he walked away from paying $40,000+ in labor and materials. $15,000+ in back pay from past jobs, plus another $25,000+ for the last eight invoices. This included invoices he asked me to hold off on sending because he claimed he couldn't afford it yet; complete remodels of single family homes and fully updating apartments. He knew exactly what he owed us; we had just gone over the newer invoices a few days prior. His units were finally livable and profiting—I know this because he even had my wife helping him with the administrative side of things (without actually paying her either).

We Are Losing Everything

Because he refused to pay us, my family is losing everything:

--We are facing eviction and will soon have literally nowhere to go. Our credit is ruined because this guy kept asking us to just put the materials on credit cards, promising he would pay us back. I trusted him because this is a legitimate property management company. When going through Accounts payable department, they said we would have to take it up with him, they had nothing to do with it. (Even though all invoices were paid through that company name weeks prior.)

--All utilities are behind. Our electricity/gas, water are about to be shut off.

--Legal Help: I have all the text/email proof, pictures, and invoices to win in court, but I cannot afford a lawyer to sue him. He knew I was only working for him, which is why he knew he could get away with this. Apparently, he has done this to quite a few other contractors already.

An Answer to Prayer

I was praying for God to give me the faith and strength to get through this. My wife and I have been through many trials before, and God has pulled us out with an abundance in our life. He has always been our refuge. I received an email about GiveSendGo. Honestly, I had never heard of it before, and my wife had to fill me in on how it works. Seeing how this is a faith-based site that helps people in need made me realize God led me here for a reason. Even though I am deeply embarrassed to ask for help, I am doing it for my wife and kids. They do not deserve this.
