The Story

I am the only son of my late father, who was an orphan himself. Since his passing 17 years ago, I have carried the weight of my family on my shoulders as his only male descendant. Like many young Albanians, I emigrated to Greece on foot in 2006 to provide for my loved ones, eventually returning to provide 24/7 care for my father during his final battle with illness.

I am a worker by nature. By 2017, through years of tireless labor, I realized my dream of opening a small electronics business. I was building a future until the devastating 2019 Earthquake in Albania turned my hard work into rubble. I refused to give up; I took out loans and borrowed from friends to restart. But then, the 2020 Pandemic hit. The world closed down, and my recovery collapsed before it could even begin.

In 2022, I pivoted to small construction projects, trying to work my way out of debt. But the interest and the weight of past liabilities have become a mountain I cannot climb alone.

The Reality of My Situation Today, I am at the lowest point of my life. My total liabilities have reached €140,000. These are not just numbers; they are debts to the people I work with every day:

€45,000 – Construction material suppliers

€7,000 – Plumbing services

€25,000 – Plastering and finishing teams

€10,000 – Drywall and interior teams

€12,500 – Bank loans

The remainder is owed to private creditors and external crews.

I am facing immense pressure. Creditors are at my door, and every traditional door—banks and foundations—has been closed in my face. It feels as though society only listens when there is a medical emergency, but financial collapse is its own kind of slow death.
