My Father Needs Urgent Rehabilitation

Mi Padre Necesita Rehabilitación Urgente. -Versión en español a continuación-

I still remember the evening received a message from my family in Spain that no daughter wants to receive: My dad had suffered a severe stroke and was in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.      The doctors were quick and they performed a life-saving operation, but the left side of his body became paralyzed. He has miraculously regained some movement in his left leg and can talk and swallow better, but he's still eating a soft diet, he's not walking and he still has no control of his left arm. He is aware and his memory is astounding.

HE IS IN URGENT NEED OF INTENSIVE REHABILITATION

The public health system everybody uses in Spain, called Seguridad Social, refuses to send him to an intensive rehabilitation program free of charge because he is over 60 years of age and they don’t believe older people are worth that kind of investment. I have been fighting and working very hard trying to find the right solution for him and there is a very good rehabilitation hospital in Barcelona that has accepted him and is ready to take him, but they require the equivalent of $25,000USD for an entire month of hospitalization and treatment BEFORE he can be admitted. Based on my father´s situation, they recommend two months of intensive therapy that will allow him to walk and use his left arm again. I have worked in rehabilitation for years and understand that, with intensive therapy sessions focusing not just on physical strength but also speech therapy and cognitive skills—and a dedicated environment tailored specifically towards his needs, he can and will recover. That’s why I am reaching out to you today with hope in my heart. Every donation helps turn his hope into reality. Both him am my mom have spent their lives giving everything they had to take care of others in need without asking for anything in return. They're not even asking now. My dad cried when he found out about this effort on his behalf, with a humble and hopeful heart.                                                                     Won’t you join me in making his recovery a possibility? Mi Padre Necesita Rehabilitación Urgente. Ayúdale a Caminar Otra Vez.

Todavía recuerdo la noche que recibí un mensaje de mi familia en España que ninguna hija quiere recibir: Mi padre había sufrido un ictus grave y estaba en camino al hospital en una ambulancia.  

Los médicos fueron rápidos y le hicieron una operación que le salvó la vida, pero el lado izquierdo de su cuerpo quedó paralizado. Milagrosamente ha recuperado el movimiento en la pierna izquierda y puede hablar y tragar mejor, pero todavía come triturado, no camina y sigue sin tener control del brazo izquierdo. Está consciente y su memoria es impresionante.

TIENE NECESIDAD URGENTE DE RECIBIR REHABILITACIÓN INTENSIVA

La Seguridad Social en España se niega a enviarlo a un hospital especializado en rehabilitación porque tiene más de 60 años y no creen que las personas mayores de esa edad valgan ese tipo de inversión. He estado trabajando mucho en buscar la solución adecuada para él. El Institut Guttmann en Barcelona lo ha aceptado y tienen una cama y un equipo de médicos y terapeutas esperándolo desde hace semanas, pero no hemos podido ingresarlo todavía porque no tenemos lo que cuesta su ingreso por la vía privada. El Institut Guttman requiere un pago por adelantado de 20.400 Euros por un mes de hospitalización y tratamiento intensivo. Según el estudio que han hecho de su caso le recomiendan 2 meses con los que esperamos que pueda volver a caminar y a usar el brazo izquierdo.   

Yo he trabajado en rehabilitación por años y sé muy bien que, con sesiones intensivas de terapia que se enfoquen tanto en fuerza física como en logopedia y en capacidades cognitivas, y en un ambiente dedicado que se ajuste a sus necesidades específicas, puede recuperarse y se va a recuperar. Por eso me dirijo a ti con esperanza en mi corazón.

Cada donación ayuda a convertir esta esperanza en realidad. Tanto él como mi madre han pasado sus vidas literalmente dando todo lo que tenían para cuidar a otros que tenían necesidad, sin pedir nada a cambio. De hecho ni siquiera ahora están pidiendo nada. Cuando mi padre se enteró de este esfuerzo en su favor lloró con humildad, agradecimiento y mucha esperanza en su corazón.

PS: Todo esto está pasando al mismo tiempo que a mi madre le han hecho tres cirugías en dos meses, y ahora mismo se está recuperando de una mastectomía. Por favor, ora por mi familia.
