My name is Aimee and I am Mai's sister. My sister has been sick most of her life and spent many of her childhood and adult years in and out of doctors offices undergoing testing. It wasn't until a few years ago that she finally had an answer. She was diagnosed with GATA2 deficiency which in simple terms is a very rare and progressive immune disorder. The only cure for this disorder is a bone marrow transplant.
Being adopted and from Liberia, Mai was told her chances of finding a donor match was not promising. She beat the odds by them not only coming back with a match in the registry, but there ended up being around 8 matches.
Mai's condition has progressed to the point where she cannot put off her transplant any longer.
Through the year I have never once heard my sister complain and I am not embellishing when I say that. Not once has she complained in spite of rarely feeling well. She is also very independent and never asks for help.
Her transplant will be taking place in Washington DC where she will be for a minimum of 3 months and she will likely be off work longer. If anyone is able to contribute even a small amount it would be very much appreciated.
