Koko is an old girl with a heart full of love and a story that breaks ours. For years, she was a loyal service dog, devoted to her owner and steadfast in her purpose. But after a lifetime of service, tragedy struck — her beloved owner was murdered, and Koko was left behind when her other caretaker walked away.

Thankfully, kind souls stepped in before she could be taken to animal control, where she would have likely been euthanized. Koko's hero, Barbara, a woman with a heart of gold who feeds and cares for the strays that wander to her job. When she heard about Koko, she didn’t hesitate — she opened her home and her heart.

Now, Koko is safe, but she needs help. She struggles to climb the steep steps into Barbara's home. My husband has offered to build a wheelchair ramp to make life easier for her. She also needs a vet visit for bloodwork, treatment for skin issues, and heartworm prevention. Barbara does everything she can for Koko, but her resources are limited — and she’s caring for the other strays who depend on her kindness.

As part of Rags to Tags Rescue & Sanctuary, we want to help Barbara continue giving Koko the comfort and care she deserves. These country dogs have been overlooked for too long — sleeping in parking lots, wandering roads, surviving on scraps. We’re working toward building a sanctuary to give dogs like Koko a safe place to heal and belong, but right now, our funds are depleted.
