Help Me Give My Nan a Safe Place To Call Home

My name is Sam, and I'm writing this with a hopeful heart for one of the most important women in my life, my 81-year-old Nan.

A couple of years ago, my Nan suffered a stroke. While she recovered better than many expected physically, life has never quite been the same. Like so many stroke survivors, she has had to grieve the loss of her independence and adjust to a life she never imagined. Despite everything, she has remained one of the kindest, strongest people I know.

Recently, she was admitted to hospital due to complications with her blood pressure. During her stay, we discovered something far more concerning. She was malnourished, and the hospital social worker identified serious concerns about her living conditions. Her home had become unsafe and unliveable, with no hot water for an extended period, despite it being winter. It also became clear that she had been living in an domestically emotionally unhealthy environment for far too long.

As soon as she was discharged, we brought her to live closer to her immediate family so she would be safe.

Now we're facing the next challenge.

I want to give my Nan the opportunity to spend the next chapter of her life with both independence and support. My dream is to purchase a home where she can have her own self-contained studio or granny flat—a space that is hers, where she can continue living independently while knowing that I'm just a few steps away if she needs me.

It would mean she could maintain her dignity and privacy while never having to face another medical emergency, unsafe living situation, or lonely day without someone checking in on her.

Unfortunately, as a single-income household, this is simply beyond my financial reach. Homes that are suitable for her mobility needs and allow us to live together are significantly more expensive than I can afford alone.

Asking for help is something I have never been comfortable doing, but if you've found your way here, I'm incredibly grateful.

Every donation, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to giving my nan the safe, secure home she deserves. If you're unable to donate, simply sharing our story would mean the world to us.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for being part of this journey.

With

love and gratitude,

Sam
