You wake up one morning with the worst headache you’ve ever had in your life.

CT scans reveal a small bleed, expected to absorb itself, and you’re told you could be out of the hospital in about a week. Not so, there’s a further bleed after seven days, and you’re taken to another facility where a state of the art digital subtraction angiography finally detects a ‘hidden’ ruptured brain aneurysm.

You’re operated on the next day by your neurosurgeon and his team, and the lengthy 6 hour procedure goes according to plan. So far, so good – not so! Three days later you suffer a vasospasm, a contraction of a blood vessel, which obstructs blood flow to part of your brain causing an ischemic injury. That very evening you nearly die. This is the nightmare my sister, Jacqueline (Jackie) Howe has had to endure. One year on, she can now communicate through face gestures and by use of her hands, and on occasion she manages to say a few words.
