I’d like to introduce you to one of the kindest, most resilient souls I’ve ever met—Trenton.

I first noticed him about three weeks ago while taking my son to school. Now I see him every morning and every afternoon. What started as a simple wave has grown into a real connection. I’ve made it a habit to stop at Casey’s each morning for a cup of coffee and a couple of donuts for him. Those small acts of kindness opened the door, and over time Trenton has trusted me with his story.

Trenton was severely abused—physically and sexually—by his stepfather. At just fifteen years old, he made the only choice he felt he had left: he ran. He had nowhere to go and no one to turn to, but the streets felt safer than the home he was escaping. The years that followed were brutal. He fought hard against alcohol and drugs, losing nearly a decade of his life to addiction.

Then, in an AA meeting, he met the love of his life. She was a recovering addict too. Their love became the anchor that helped them both stay clean. For almost five years they built a life together—sober, in their own apartment, and genuinely happy. When they found out they were expecting a baby boy, Trenton was the happiest he had ever been.

At 28 weeks, they lost their son. The stillbirth shattered them both. A month later, unable to bear the weight of that grief, his girlfriend took her own life.

Her parents blamed Trenton. They left him with nothing—no home, no support, and nowhere to go. The pain was unbearable, and he turned back to alcohol to survive it.

But here’s the part that still gives me hope: Trenton has been clean and sober for over two years now. He knows the road ahead is hard. He knows he needs mental health support to heal from everything he’s endured. The hardest part is simply getting started when you’re homeless.

Trenton doesn’t want pity. He wants what so many of us take for granted—a safe place to sleep, a chance to find work, and the stability to finally address the trauma he’s carried for so long. A few months of housing would give him the foundation he needs to rebuild. A bed. A door that locks. A quiet place to rest his head at night. Those things can change everything for someone who’s been living without them.
