Help KYMaverick (Joe Lovell) Breathe Easier

Joe Lovell, known to many on X as @KYMaverick1, is a 69-year-old retired optometrist from Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and a dedicated advocate for justice in the true crime community. His own health struggles began decades ago, yet he has faced every challenge with quiet strength and resilience.

In 2001 Joe underwent aortic valve replacement. He successfully beat prostate cancer in 2009. In 2011 he had ascending aortic aneurysm repair, followed by multiple cardiac ablations in 2013. In 2020, during the early COVID period, he was diagnosed at Mayo Clinic with hypersensitivity pneumonitis and what was believed to be inoperable liver cancer. Thanks to curative proton radiation therapy at Mayo, he has remained cancer-free for more than six years.

Unfortunately, the hypersensitivity pneumonitis has progressed into progressive fibrotic interstitial lung disease with pulmonary fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension. Recent testing at Mayo Clinic documents rapid functional decline. Pulmonary function tests show significant lung restriction and severely impaired ability to transfer oxygen into the blood. A right heart catheterization in July 2025 revealed significant exercise-induced pulmonary hypertension driven largely by heart strain. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing in April 2026 confirmed that his overall exercise capacity is severely reduced, with limitations in heart, lung, and oxygen exchange even on supplemental oxygen.

Joe has now been referred to the Vanderbilt Lung Transplant program — a center with among the best outcomes in the country — for evaluation and listing. A lung transplant is the last-resort treatment for his lung failure and represents his best opportunity to regain independence and quality of life. Vanderbilt’s official evaluation process confirms that patients with his condition (progressive fibrotic interstitial lung disease and pulmonary hypertension) are appropriate candidates when other treatments are no longer effective.

The transplant process requires substantial non-covered expenses: an expected 8–14 days in the hospital followed by at least three months of living within 10 minutes of Vanderbilt (with two dedicated caregivers, one providing 24/7 support). Additional costs for Joe include temporary housing for the patient, travel for monthly clinic visits throughout the first year, and daily living expenses during recovery. While insurance is expected to cover the majority of the procedure, skilled nursing care, and core medications, these additional burdens — plus potential co-pays on lifelong anti-rejection drugs — represent a significant financial strain at a time when Joe must focus entirely on healing.

Joe has never asked for help before, but the speed of his decline makes this urgent. As his friends and supporters, we have created this campaign to ensure he can complete evaluation, listing, and successful transplantation without financial distraction.

Every donation will go directly toward the uncovered expenses — lodging, caregiving, travel, uncovered medical expenses and support — that stand between Joe and the life-saving lung transplant he needs.

Thank you for standing with Joe Lovell — true crime justice advocate, survivor, and fighter — as he battles for the breath and life he has fought so hard to keep.
