Greg's Fight Unfolds - Join Us in Healing Hope!

🌱💔 The Journey So Far...

After a series of tests over the summer, September 24th Greg was given the diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) with two mutations of the TP53 gene. This is a group of disorders caused by blood cells that are poorly formed and don't work properly. MDS results from something amiss in the spongy material inside your bones where blood cells are made, bone marrow.

Greg Stephens is married to Darlene Kerr Stephens and they live in Fort Myers, Florida.

Greg and Darlene moved to Ft. Myers from Gadsden, AL. He went to Southside High School. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps where he served in California, the Philippines and Okinawa, Japan. He is the stepdad of Daniel (Jessica) Kilgore, Cary (Lauren) Kilgore and Allen (Ashleigh) Kilgore. Greg and Darlene have 10 grandchildren.

Greg currently works at HCA Florida Lehigh Hospital as the IT Director. He has worked previously at Lehigh Regional Medical Center and Riverview Regional Medical Center (Gadsden, AL). He also was previously an EMT on the Critical Care transport team, among other duties. He was also a volunteer fireman in Knighton's Crossroads in Alabama. 

They are very involved in McGregor Baptist Church. Greg is on the security team and life group teacher and Darlene works in nursery every Sunday.

🏥 The Struggle: Facing MDS

Greg started chemotherapy in September. He has undergone 2 cycles to date and will have his 3rd in December. After the third cycle, he will have another bone marrow biopsy at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL. Depending on the findings of this biopsy, he may be able to have a bone marrow transplant (Stem Cell transplant). With this transplant, he will be in the hospital for a minimum of 30 days. After discharge, he will have to stay in the Tampa area, within 30 minutes of Moffitt, for at least 2 months for daily clinic visits.
