One rainy morning, as I sat in my wheelchair at a bus stop, rain dripping down from the awning above, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed. This scene was now part of my everyday life—a stark contrast to who I once was: a dedicated nurse, riding her bike to work every day with a smile on her face and dreams filling her heart.

A decade ago, just two weeks after buying a used car (my small victory against the world), an unexpected seizure led to a catastrophic accident that left me with severe injuries—including mobility issues that forced my retirement from nursing. It felt like I was living in slow motion while watching life move forward without me.

I fought hard but faced setbacks, including multiple surgeries and financial struggles due to mounting medical bills. The support of friends dwindled as they moved on with their lives, leaving me feeling more isolated and in pain than ever before. Yet, through it all, I clung onto a tiny thread of hope—a belief that there must be something better waiting just around the corner.

Now, at 65 years old, instead of enjoying retirement or traveling to see my grandkids across the country, I exist day by day in this state of limbo. But even through all these hardships, one thing has remained constant: my desire and ability to help others. It’s what drove me as a nurse and continues to inspire me today.

This is why I am swallowing my pride and reaching out for your support—to regain some semblance of independence that will not only improve MY life but also allow ME to continue helping those in need, whether it's volunteering at local shelters or aiding neighbors during emergencies.
