Lens of Kibera

Hello friends and kind-hearted supporters,

My name is Joseph Ochieng, and I was born and raised in Kibera, Nairobi. Despite being one of Africa’s largest informal settlements, Kibera is full of life, resilience, and untold stories that the world rarely sees. It’s these stories — of strength, struggle, hope, and humanity — that I want to capture through the lens of a camera.

I am raising between Ksh 200,000 and Ksh 300,000 to support two deeply personal and community-driven goals:

🎯 1. To buy a camera and basic photography equipment

I’m currently working on a photo documentary to showcase the real, everyday life of Kibera. My dream is to tell the stories of my people — their joy, creativity, hard work, and survival — from my own eyes and heart as a member of this community.

With this amount, I will purchase:

A professional camera

A tripod and memory cards

Lighting and accessories

A basic laptop and editing software (if funds allow)

This equipment will help me:

Take quality photos and videos

Share these visuals online to raise awareness and shift perceptions

Train and inspire other youth to tell their stories creatively

❤️ 2. To support the vulnerable in my community

Any money remaining after buying the equipment will go directly toward helping:

Needy children with food, school fees, and uniforms

Young girls with sanitary pads and hygiene kits

Struggling families with clothes, shoes, and small household items

📍 Why This Matters

Kibera is often portrayed as a place of only poverty — but I know, and live, a very different story. This project is about giving dignity to my people through storytelling, and using any support I receive to give back to those who need it most.

🙏 How You Can Help

Every donation — no matter the size — makes a real difference. You’re not just helping me buy a camera. You’re empowering a voice from within the slums to tell our own stories and help our own people.

Together, we can change how the world sees Kibera — not as a forgotten place, but as a community full of potential and humanity.

With gratitude,

Joseph Ochieng
