My name is Chad, and I’ve been the full-time caregiver for my mother for many years. For nearly 16 years, we’ve lived in a HUD-funded housing unit through the Wetumka Housing Authority in Wetumka Oklahoma. What began as a temporary housing solution has turned into a long-term stay due to difficult circumstances, including a lack of resources, limited caregiving support, and my mother's previous marriage, where planning for a more permanent home was not prioritized.

Unfortunately, this place no longer feels like a home. Over time, the environment has grown increasingly hostile. No matter what we do, it seems like we're always facing threats of eviction. It's become clear that staying here is no longer sustainable for our physical, emotional, or mental well-being.

As my mother’s primary caregiver, I’m limited in the kinds of jobs I can take, even though I hold an Associate of Applied Science degree in Information Technology. Finding affordable and trustworthy adult care to give me flexibility is extremely difficult. But I want to change our situation—not just for survival, but for peace, stability, and self-sufficiency.

Our Plan:

We are seeking support to make a fresh start by building a sustainable, off-grid homestead. Here's the vision:

1. Secure land – This is the first and most essential step.
2. Build a modest, livable home – One that meets our basic needs and is accessible for my mother.
3. Install a septic system for safe and independent waste management.
4. Develop a sustainable water supply – A private well or two.
5. Generate our own power – Using a mix of solar panels, wind turbines, and battery storage, all stored in a container setup.
6. Grow our own food – With a garden or small-scale mini farm to reduce reliance on store-bought food and increase food security.
