Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere by many measures. Some four-fifths of its population lives in absolute poverty, and as much as three-fifths of the population is unemployed or underemployed.

Haiti’s death rate is high, mainly because of the prevalence of infectious and parasitic diseases, diseases of the circulatory system, and conditions associated with malnutrition; moreover, Haiti has a higher incidence of HIV infection and AIDS and a higher infant mortality rate than any other country in the Western Hemisphere. Roughly three-fourths of Haitian households lack running water, and unsafe water—along with inadequate housing and unsanitary living conditions—contributes to the high incidence of infectious diseases. There is a chronic shortage of health care personnel, and hospitals lack resources. 

But now thing are much much worse. On top of this already difficult situation, now various groups or gangs are and have taken over large parts of Haiti. Shutting down airports, hospitals, cities roads, taking over towns burning homes and murdering many Haitians in the process. This has created a much worse health crisis in a country where it was already bad. 

My personal involvement started after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Over 200,000 people died and millions were left homeless. Through lasting friendships made in Haiti and ongoing firsthand updates, I have been acutely aware of the worsening crisis. My most recent trip was the summer of 2022.. Gangs had control of certain areas even then. 

Gardy Charles is the young man who has been my main connection. He worked as a translator during my first trip. He and his family help their small community as they are able. Various missionaries, through Gardy, have been able help many in the surrounding communities over the years. 

It is with his coordination and Dr. Ralph that this clinic was born. With the generous help of those of you who gave of your prayers and financial donations, the clinic was able to open for one day, July 29th. (I have added pictures).

Over 100 people were seen, but estimates that over 400 left because they didn't want to wait (we only had one doctor). These are people who haven't been able to see a doctor or get any type of health care in many months.

In order to keep the clinic going, we will need regular support.
