SkyStrong – 12-Year-Old in ICU at MUSC

Right now, a 12-year-old girl named Skylar is fighting a battle no child should ever have to face.

What started as a simple hospital visit on March 9th quickly turned into something no family could have prepared for.

After a recent procedure, Skylar stopped eating and was taken to the hospital for fluids. It was only supposed to be a short stay… just a couple of days.

But days turned into weeks.

Skylar began running fevers, vomiting, and doctors struggled to find the cause. Then on March 18th, everything changed—Skylar had two seizures and was rushed to the PICU.

From there, her condition worsened rapidly.

She began struggling to breathe. Doctors discovered her lungs were filling with fluid. Soon after, she had to be placed on a BiPAP machine… and then a ventilator.

Her family watched helplessly as things continued to decline.

Then came devastating news:

Severe sepsis. A blood clot on her heart.

At one point, her family was told there was nothing more doctors could do… except place her on ECMO—life support.

They made the only choice they could:

Do everything possible to save her life.

Skylar was airlifted by helicopter to MUSC in Charleston, where she continued to fight.

And then… a miracle.

Skylar has now been removed from life support.

Her heart is functioning normally.

Her lungs are recovering.

She is still here.

God spared her life.

But while Skylar continues to fight and recover, her family is now facing the overwhelming weight of:
