Sunday morning we took our daughter Wendy to the ER because she was extremely fatigued and weak. What we thought might be something minor turned into something much bigger very quickly.

At the hospital, they found her hemoglobin was at a 3. For reference, doctors get concerned at 7, and 15 is considered normal. She received a blood transfusion and was then flown to Primary Children's Hospital.

After more testing, doctors found that 70% of her blood cells were blast cells (immature cells), where normal is less than 5%. By Monday afternoon, we got the diagnosis: Wendy has leukemia.

She started treatment immediately.

Over these first few days she is going through a lot—blood transfusions, a PICC line for medication, a bone marrow biopsy, and chemotherapy, including treatment to her spinal fluid where leukemia can hide. There are still tests being finalized, but doctors are optimistic. This is the most common type of childhood leukemia and is considered very treatable. So far, she’s already showing signs of responding well.

Through all of this, Wendy has been incredibly strong. She’s handled everything better than we could have expected and continues to show a tough, steady spirit.

The road ahead is going to be long. Her treatment is expected to last 2–3 years depending on how she responds. While we’re hopeful, this will bring a lot of challenges for our family.

Between frequent trips from Herriman to Salt Lake, time away from work, and the many unexpected costs that come with long-term treatment, things add up quickly—especially while trying to keep life steady for our other four kids.

We don’t usually ask for help, but right now our focus needs to be on being there for Wendy and getting her through this.
