As December unfolds — twinkling lights on porches, cold air on our breath, familiar carols drifting everywhere — it’s easy to slip into the rush of the Christmas season. But this month, we want to pause and ask a simple question: What if the greatest present we give someone is our presence?

Not out of obligation, but out of compassion, intentionality, faith, and love. Sometimes simply showing up for someone becomes the gift they remember long after the season ends. And whether you have a little or a lot to offer, your presence can be the present that matters most — and there are so many meaningful ways to show up.

Here are 10 ways to give generously — online and in person — by showing up with presence this season.
 

1. Give Prayer (The Most Overlooked Kind of Giving)

Saying “I’ll pray for you” is easy. Stopping and actually praying is presence.

Prayer is powerful. And it’s free. It’s one of the purest forms of generosity — giving someone your attention, compassion, and faith right in the moment they need it.

Ways to pray with presence:
 

• Pray for campaigns — sometimes prayer is the gift that means the most.

James 5:16 says, “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”

2. Give Something Unexpected 

Some of the best presents can’t be wrapped:
 

•  A phone call to someone who feels forgotten
•  A handwritten note of encouragement
•  Forgiveness to someone who hurt you or someone you love 
•  Kindness to someone overlooked

These gifts often cost nothing of monetary value, but can be the most meaningful.
 

3. Give to Your Neighbor

We often think generosity starts “out there,” but Jesus’ command to love your neighbor (Mark 12:31) starts with… well, your actual neighbor.

Ideas to show up with presence next door:
 

• Invite someone over for coffee or dinner
• Offer to walk their dog
• Share groceries or extra pantry items
• Check in on them during a tough season

Even the smallest act of giving presence can have a huge impact.
 

4. Give Away Stuff You Don’t Need

Clutter in our homes often represents abundance someone else is praying for.

Ways to give:
 

• Donate clothes, toys, or household items
• Share books, tools, or unused kitchen items
• Bless a family you know with kids’ clothes or baby items

Generosity isn’t always costly; sometimes it’s simply noticing what you already have to share with someone else. 
 

5. Give Your Time

Sometimes the most powerful gift you can give is simply showing up. In a digital age where everyone feels rushed, unseen, or distracted, your time and presence are more precious than ever. Look for someone nearby who could use a visit, a helping hand, or just a listening ear — or jump in with a local organization already doing good work in your community, even if you can only offer a few hours.

Here are simple ways to give your time generously:
 

• Volunteer at a shelter or food pantry
• Visit someone who’s lonely, grieving, or ill
• Help a neighbor with chores, errands, or yard work
• Offer babysitting to an exhausted parent who needs a breather

6. Give Sacrificially (More Than Leftovers)

True generosity sometimes stretches us and makes us sacrifice something we might want to help someone else...and that’s a good thing. 

Sacrificial giving might look like:
 

• Skipping a luxury to help a child get warm clothes
• Rearranging your schedule to show up for someone
• Choosing generosity when it’s inconvenient
• Making food to bring to shut-ins
• Bringing flowers to your local nursing home, or sitting and talking with some of the residents
• Creating baskets full of essentials and gifts for foster kids
• Inviting people into your home (and guess what, your home doesn’t have to be immaculate)

Consider the widow in Mark 12. She gave only two coins, yet Jesus praised her—not for the amount, but for the heart behind it. Because she gave all that she had, trusting that God was fully sufficient for her every need.

Sacrifice is presence in its most Christlike form.
